Emailing professors: a general how to

You're staring at the screen. A simple request of a professor or TA has turned into three paragraphs. You're trying to be casual and intelligent and not needy when in fact you need something. OR You have just failed a test or missed a deadline. In a paniced frenzy you type two sentences into your [...]

I went to my backup school

*Heres a bit of my thoughts on going to "top choice" school I wrote a while back. I think about this a lot as a high school tutor and college admissions guide. I am sure I will add more to this post as time goes on.* Today is May 1st. Seniors all around the world [...]

Mentoring Matters!

Wow am I excited to be writing this post. I stole this title from a seminar I went to last year given at NCAR by Michael S Williams (who has some amazing work you can find here). He said a lot of great things in his seminar. One quote that will stick with me is [...]

Getting the most out of tutoring

As a student who has desperately needed help, and a tutor who has had 6+ years of experience teaching just about every level of math and science imaginable, I feel like I've seen just about every student-tutor relationship out there. Lets face it, even the best tutors in the world can only do so much. [...]

Keeping cool through college admissions

August. Its hot. School is back. The common application is out. If you're starting your senior year of high school chances are people are asking you where you want to be next year. If you're a high school junior, you might be jumping into a daunting schedule. And on top of all of this, college [...]

How to stay engaged in lecture 101

So you’re dropping thousand of dollars on a college education. (Or you have a scholarship, yay!) You want to make your time and money count. In all honesty, theres nothing I hate more than seeing people scrolling through Facebook or online shopping. WHY WOULD YOU GO TO LECTURE IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO WATCH THE [...]

What to look for on your college visit

The snow is thawing and spring break is approaching. If you are a high schooler, this change of season very well might be a sign that college visits are coming. This is advice for your visit, and not the actual college choice. If you need help making your final decision, have no fear, check out [...]

Why you REALLY should keep a journal

The day I turned 21 I started the first page in my blue journal. The journal was leather, with a beautiful embossed print on the front and a strap that wrapped around. I received it that year for Christmas, and it was the most beautiful journal I had ever had. Today, days after my 23rd [...]

An honest account of failing a class in college

December 26, 2018January 4, 2019by Paige HoelLeave a Comment on An honest account of failing a class in college

Facebook popped up a hilarious memory a couple of days ago. It was a status from my freshman year of college, right before my final. It read "Probably my hardest final of the quarter in two hours- 95% of my grade is the final and no curve. Ready to murder you calc 3B. Thanks for [...]

I PROMISE there is more to my life and personality than triathlons. But they produce silly pictures and make good stories so heres my 70.3 Saint George recap:
Me: I hate riding bikes
Fun fact: Someone in one of these pictures had literally just pooped their pants
Ironman 70.3 Oceanside proved to be far more mental than physical. Objectively the result wasn’t terrible: 4/52 and I achieved a goal of getting a spot for world championships, but emotionally I am incredibly torn. To make a long story short my nerves and frustration with my training performance for this race culminated in a mental low early in the bike ride. The minutes felt like hours. 56 miles later I was really questioning why I do this sport, why I have become so much more self critical these past few months, why some asshole invented the bicycle. BUT I managed to make it to the run because I knew I had friends and family there who were so eager to support me. The run was electric! The joy in those 13 miles washed most of the mental turmoil away. @emmaabrahamson @kaseypinter @trichanclas thank you!! Your cheers meant more than you could know. @bfield97, I will never be able to express how grateful I am for your undying enthusiasm for me and patience while my mental game is crumbling. And to everyone who sent me sweet messages and cheered me on at home, you rock!!
Riding bikes isn’t that serious pass it on!!
A week ago I passed my oral qualifying exams and I am now a PhD candidate. This is a pretty big achievement in the journey of a PhD but to be frank it feels weird to celebrate it. The stress and the work load of the last couple of months sucked the life out of me in a way I had never experienced before. I lost my sense of self and slipped into a depressive episode I naively thought I would never be susceptible too. It’s been the longest winter of my life.
We went to Austin to run but shifted focus to eating as many breakfast tacos as possible 🤠
26 was the best year of my life. Hands down. Seems like they keep doing that, getting better and better. I like it :) Big love to everyone who made me feel so damn special for this bday. Now for more silly joy in this 27th year!!
